Desalination Plants

What are water desalination and purification plants ?

These are integrated engineering systems designed to convert water from various sources—such as seawater, wells, groundwater, or canals—into water suitable for human consumption or industrial use.

These plants rely on multiple treatment stages, beginning with preliminary treatment and fine filtration to remove suspended impurities, followed by ultrafiltration to eliminate organic matter and micro-bacteria.

Next comes the reverse osmosis (RO) stage, utilizing high-efficiency membranes for dissolved salts and minerals to ensure ultra-pure water, culminating in sterilization, chemical conditioning, and final water quality adjustment.

Note that the composition and specifications of these plants vary precisely after conducting the necessary laboratory analyses for each water source, ensuring the selection of the most appropriate treatment system that achieves the highest quality and purity at the lowest possible operating cost.

How it Works?

The efficiency of water desalination and purification plants relies on successive engineering stages carefully designed to ensure the production of high-purity water.
  • Stage One: Intake and Pre-treatment, where raw water is drawn and passed through screens and filters to remove large impurities and sand.
  • Stage Two: Fine and Multi-media Filtration, which relies on various media such as sand and activated carbon to remove fine suspended solids and reduce odors.
  • Stage Three: Ultrafiltration, an advanced technology utilizing very fine membranes to trap organic matter, bacteria, and fine particles to ensure water clarity.
  • Stage Four: Reverse Osmosis (RO), the core stage for desalinating high-salinity water, where water is pressurized through semi-permeable membranes to separate dissolved salts and minerals.
  • Stage Five: Chemical Adjustment and Sterilization, in which specific proportions of standard minerals are re-added, and the water is disinfected using modern methods such as UV or chlorine to ensure safety for use.
